Celebrate Pride Month with an unforgettable evening of film, conversation, and community at the Pride Is Justice Film Series, presented by Queer Voices NYC Film Festival in partnership with the Brooklyn Public Library at the Dweck Theater.
This special event features four powerful, award-winning short films that honor Black and Brown queer history, resilience, joy, and self-expression. Through intimate storytelling and bold perspectives, these films spotlight the voices, experiences, and legacies that continue to shape LGBTQ+ culture and community today.
About the Films
Happy Birthday, Marsha!
Directed by Tourmaline and Sasha Wortzel
This acclaimed short film imagines transgender activist and performer Marsha “Pay It No Mind” Johnson in the hours leading up to the historic 1969 Stonewall Riots, offering a moving portrait of one of the most influential figures in queer liberation history.
Before They Tell Our Stories
Directed by Brandon C. Smith
Set at Medgar Evers College, a historic Black institution in Brooklyn’s vibrant Caribbean community, this documentary explores the coming-out journeys of LGBTQ+ students and faculty navigating identity, safety, and belonging. The film celebrates the fullness of queer lives while redefining what it means to come out.
