Quilt to Coat Retreat with Teresa Coates- March 4-7, 2025

Come help celebrate the kick-off to National Quilting Month by attending the Quilt to Coat workshop with Teresa Coates!

Teresa is a nationally known sewing educator, accomplished quilt maker, travel writer, pattern designer, and relentless adventurer who wants you to fall in love with sewing.  

Her pattern line, Crinkle Dreams, includes patterns for beginners and more experienced sewists, bridging the worlds of quilting and sewing, as well.  Teresa was the host of “Sew Together TuesdayTM” from 2020-24 and currently hosts MAKE with Teresa Coates on YouTube.  Online and in stores, Teresa has been educating and fostering a movement of accessible sewing since 2010.

The headliner of this workshop features the Elemental Coat pattern . It can be made with a re-purposed quilt, quilted panels, canvas, denim, LuxeCuddle and more.

The pattern was designed to be simple enough for a beginner sewing or quilter to make, but with plenty of room for more experienced sewist to put their own spin on it.  All the seams are fairly straight, there’s no fancy stitching techniques (although she will include a few construction techniques that might surprise you!), and it’s finished with a simple quarter-inch binding to make it extra easy for the quilters in the house.

Supplies Needed:

• Elemental Coat Pattern (included with the fees)
• If re-purposing a quilt (minimum twin size, larger for larger sizes or longer version) OR 3 yds of quilted fabric or 3 yds denim, kantha, or canvas (Prework prior to class:  bring already quilted fabric with you)
• 5-7 yds coordinating bias binding
• Coordinating polyester thread
• 80/12 Microtex needle
• Sharp, long pins
• Fabric clips
• Micro-serrated scissors (like Karen Kay Buckley) is recommended
• Stiletto
• Fabric safe marking pen
• Rotary cutter with new blade and/or sharp scissors
• 6”x12” or 6”x24” acrylic ruler
• 18” – 24” separating zipper (optional)
• 3-5 1” buttons (optional)

Schedule for the week:

• Monday – Early Bird Arrival for those who wish to come the night before the event, set up, shopping, open sew.  Breakfast is included Tuesday morning for Early Bird arrivers.
• Tuesday – Check-in, set up, shopping, open sew (lunch on your own), and Scavenger Hunt (dinner is included).
• Wednesday – Breakfast, class with Teresa, break for lunch and resume class after lunch, open sewing, dinner.
• Thursday – Breakfast, class with Teresa, break for lunch and resume class after lunch, open sewing, dinner, Show ‘N Tell.
• Friday – Farewell breakfast and checkout is at noon.

What to Expect From MSQC:

Sleeping Rooms - All rooms are upstairs and are shared - there are no private rooms available and a chair lift is available for assistance. There are two ADA rooms available upon request.

Meals - Dinner will be served on Tuesday evening. A continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday morning, enjoy a hot "farewell" breakfast before you check out and get on the road! Of course, for you early birds Monday evening, a continental breakfast will be served Tuesday morning.

Snacks - We set out a snack table - because sewing definitely makes us all snack-y. We provide light snacks for the group but if there is something particular you crave, feel free to bring it.

Sewing Table Seating - We do have assigned seating for the well-lit 4' sewing tables (personal sewing lamps are optional). If you are traveling with a friend or friends and would like to sit together - no problem! Please just indicate this on your registration form with the names of the people you wish to sit by. We also provide cutting/ironing tables, and power strips and small side tables.

Sewing Machines - As we have said above, you are welcome to bring your own sewing machine (don't forget all your cords)!! But if you want to travel light, you can absolutely use one of our machines at a cost of $75 for the duration of the retreat. If you do need to reserve a machine, please indicate this on your registration form.

We know things happen, but if for some reason you need to cancel after you have booked your reservation, please let us know as soon as possible. The retreat is only fully refundable 60 days in advance of the start date. In the event that you are past the 60-day notice and are unable to attend, you may transfer your reservation to someone else or move to another retreat at a later date.
