Queerness is Nature: Perilla People’s Garden with Ginger Brooks Takahashi

Have you heard of perilla? Maybe you’re more familiar with some of its common names like shiso, wild basil, purple mint, beefsteak plant, rattlesnake W**d, or many others. Essential in Japanese and Korean cuisine and a fundamental herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, the plant is the center of Perilla People’s Garden, Ginger Brooks Takahashi’s installation at the 59th Carnegie International. 

Get to know perilla through the lens of food, history, and culture! Join Ginger for an artist talk about the project, along with a tour of the outdoor garden and accompanying indoor installation.

We meet outside of the Carnegie Museum of Arts on Thursday, October 1st, at 5 pm. We can’t wait to see you there!
