Queering Private Law Queerathon

Join us for the first Private Law Queerathon, part of the Queering Private Law Project, on Wednesday 19 November, 3–6pm (UK time) at King’s College London, Dickson Poon School of Law, with online participation available.

The Queerathon will bring together academics and practitioners interested in private law (broadly defined, including contracts, torts, property, restitution, family, company, and intellectual property), as well as those engaged in LGBTQI+ rights, queer theory, or who identify as LGBTQI+.

The aim is to create a space for collective imagination, collaboration, and critique at the intersection of private law and queer thought.

Taking inspiration from the hackathon model, this condensed session will focus on brainstorming and collaborative idea-generation, asking what queer theory can reveal about the structures, assumptions, and blind spots of private law. No paper or abstract submission is required—this is an introductory meeting and conversation-starter, designed to spark connections and open up new lines of inquiry.

This is not a traditional academic conference. Rather, it is a collaborative workshop where ideas are shared, tested, and developed in real time. Participants will have the opportunity to feed into a growing international network of scholars and practitioners working on queer private law, and to help set the agenda for future research collaborations, publications, and curriculum innovations.

The Queerathon forms part of a larger three-stage project, which began with the Queering Private Law conference at UCL in 2023 and will culminate in an edited collection and further workshops. It offers a chance to join the conversation at a formative moment and help shape the emerging field of queer theory and private law.

Attendance is free, but registration is required. We warmly welcome scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and students alike whether you are already working in this area or simply curious to learn and contribute.
