Lam Dance Works returns to Tanglewood for an intimate evening where dance, live music, and the human voice come together to illuminate memory, identity, and our shared humanity. The program will opens with a musical prelude, followed by three distinctive works from internationally celebrated choreographers: Peggy Baker’s Night Sky, inspired by the night sky as “a map of time;” Jorma Elo’s Solo Prelude, a deeply personal work created for John Lam and shaped by their twenty-plus-year artistic relationship; and Yury Yanowsky’s Subject 41, accompanied by a soprano in a dialogue between voice and movement.

ARTISTIC BIO & Q&A: Founder and Artistic Director John Lam will offer insights into each piece’s history, creative process, and artistic significance, inviting audiences more deeply into the stories behind the movement. Following the performance will be John Lam’s conversation with the audience featuring all participating dancers and musicians, creating an opportunity to connect directly with the artists and experience the ideas, relationships, and inspiration that bring each work to life.
John Lam is gay, born in northern California to immigrant refugee parents from Vietnam. Both parents were extremely poor, had no formal education, but were working and needed a place for their children to go after school, so they enrolled Lam at age 4 in an inner-city program to study dance. On a field trip to see the San Francisco Ballet, Lam says, “I remember the music and watching beautiful dancing… and seeing men onstage!” Lam studied at the Marin Ballet School from 1988 to 2000, taking classes with notable ballarinas and a Finnish ballet dancer Mikko Nissinen, who 15 years later became the Director of The Boston Ballet, where John Lam became a Principle Dancer (highest rank within a professional dance company) in 2014.
During his tenure at Boston Ballet, he has performed lead roles in several George Balanchine ballets including A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cappélia, Rubies, The Four Temperaments, and Divertimento; Prince Desire in Marius Petipa’s Sleeping Beauty; and the Faun in Vaslav Nijinsky’s Afternoon of a Faun.
He married a high-powered lawyer who runs his own legal firm in Boston. Lam had been thinking of bringing children into their life for about a year before he mentioned it to John. “John is well known in Boston as having a mover, shaker kind of personality.” Lam said. “If you had asked any of his friends at the time if John would ever have kids, they would have said absolutely no!” They said the same thing about John when it came to marriage, but everything changed when he met Lam and a year after they got married, they decided to have kids. John Lam is the first openly gay man in the Boston Ballet to take advantage of the company’s maternity leave program.
