Queer and trans people have always found each other. Before any church hung a rainbow flag, before anyone asked our pronouns politely, we were blessing each other in plain sight, with a glance held one beat too long, a color worn on purpose, a joke that sailed right over the heads of everyone who wanted us gone. They called it deviance. They called it hiding. Those codes were sacraments, passed hand to hand, and the hope they carry has never once dependend on the odds of total victory to show up. Queer hope flirts. It winks at a future that hasn't said yes yet and gets dressed up for it anyway. This lecture asks what our ways of finding each other reveal about the sacred, and what it would cost to quit belonging carefully, at arm's length, and belong to each other all the way, because what we are is beautiful.

Rev. Sean Neil-Barron (he/him) is a called minister of Foothills Unitarian in Fort Collins, Colorado, and a graduate of Harvard Divinity School. He lives with his husband Charles, their son, and their dog Dollie.
