Since the military coup of February 2021, Myanmar has been engulfed in a profound political and humanitarian crisis.
Under military rule, the stakes of artistic and political expression are severe. Censorship is pervasive, speech is criminalised, and queer lives, already marginalised before the coup, have been pushed further underground. Yet despite these conditions, queer artistic practices have continued to flourish: documenting lived experience, preserving erased histories, and asserting the existence and dignity of LGBTQ+ people in Myanmar.
This panel brings together a Queer of Burma Alternative (QBA) representative and a queer artist from Burma to explore the intersection of artistic practice, queer identity, and political resistance in the context of Myanmar’s ongoing revolution.
Moderator: Ida Fagervold
Ida is a PhD Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo. Since 2022 she has been researching LGBTQ+ participation in the Burma Spring Revolution.
