OCD and Eating Disorders: Differentiating and Addressing These Closely-Related Conditions
Date: May 15th, 2026 at 10:00am
Location: 2800 N Orange Ave, third floor
Price: $15 general admission, students free (please provide proof of active Student ID)
Presentation Description:
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify shared risk factors and differentiators across OCD and Eating Disorders.
2. Summarize evidence-based practices for the treatment of OCD.
3. Describe considerations for determining how to sequence the treatment of OCD and an eating disorder.
4. Describe the impact of malnutrition on the brain.
Description: The presence of co-occurring conditions can complicate the treatment of eating disorders. A common co-occurring condition is obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In fact, as many as 35% of patients with eating disorders also have OCD, with particularly high rates for those diagnosed with anorexia nervosa (AN) and avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). This presentation will provide an overview of why OCD and eating disorders seem to be so closely related, help providers differentiate between the two conditions, and understand malnutrition’s impact on neurobiology. There will also be an interactive portion to help providers problem-solve in real-time how to incorporate treatment of OCD into eating disorder recovery.
