About this Event

Details:

Quantum computing, a technology revolution at an early stage, promises to completely overturn many fields. It is a completely new way of representing and processing large amounts of information using qubits, at a scale and speed that is at a much higher level than the current computing paradigms. Quantum computing uses qubits to represent information using quantum mechanical principles like probabilistic superposition of states, entanglement and action from a distance as well as uncertainty principle; which are operated on in quantum circuits with quantum gates.

While this sounds like science fiction, quantum computers actually exist and are being used to accomplish useful tasks, though they are highly error prone and many technical barriers need to be overcome. It is expected that within a decade, quantum computers will advance to solve many critical problems limited by the current hardware and software. Quantum inspired computing uses algorithms and ideas from quantum computing on today’s systems to make an impact.

The quantum computing ecosystem is rapidly expanding with large investments by both public and private players flowing into hardware development and scaling, qubit control and error correction; middleware between standard and quantum computers, development frameworks and tools; and algorithmic & applications development. Active fields where quantum computing holds high promise include large scale system optimization, quantum sensing, materials design, artificial intelligence and machine learning, physics solvers, chemistry, finance, cybersecurity and engineering design.

In this talk, we will go through an introduction to quantum computing: origins, the fundamental concepts, key algorithms, the quantum computing ecosystem and applications; current state of the art, limitations and future opportunities. We will also go through demos and examples, which audience members can follow along using their laptops and public Python notebooks on Google Collab. No previous knowledge of quantum computing is assumed.
