Join us at Queen City Music Studios for an intimate Storefront Listening Room concert with Nashville-based duo Tim May & Steve Smith, bringing an evening of original, traditional, bluegrass, swing, and acoustic music.
Mandolinist and vocalist Steve Smith and guitarist and vocalist Tim May have been making music together for years, first meeting while on staff at Camp Bluegrass in Levelland, Texas. Their shared love of tradition, improvisation, and adventurous acoustic music has grown into a dynamic duo known for dazzling instrumental interplay, tight vocal harmonies, and a wide-ranging repertoire. Their performances feature guitar, mandolin, octave mandolin, twin-mandolin arrangements, original compositions, and traditional favorites.
MORE ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Steve Smith is a celebrated mandolinist, vocalist, educator, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who has performed and taught at festivals and music camps across the country and internationally. A member of The Hard Road Trio and the Alan Munde Gazette, he has appeared at festivals including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, RockyGrass, Walnut Valley and High Mountain Hay Fever, and has performed and recorded with artists including Bill Evans, Alan Munde, Tony Trischka, Tim O'Brien, Missy Raines, Shad Cobb, Robert Bowlin, Jim Hurst, and Tim May. Smith has appeared on more than 50 albums as a performer and producer.
Tim May has worked in the Nashville music scene for more than two decades as a sideman, session player, band member, and performer. His credits include touring and recording with Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless, and John Cowan, as well as regular appearances on the Grand Ole Opry with Mike Snider. May played the solo guitar on Charlie Daniels' recording of I'll Fly Away, which was nominated for a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance. He was also session leader on the acclaimed Moody Bluegrass album and was selected by The Nashville Scene as a Best Instrumentalist in its 2012 Reader's Choice Poll.
Together, May and Smith honor the rich tradition of guitar-and-mandolin duets that helped shape early country and bluegrass music while pushing the format into new territory. Their recordings—including M**der of Crows, A Tribute to the Carter Family, and The Hillsboro Hay Incident—showcase the duo's adventurous approach to acoustic music.
