Experience Qairo in concert—a mesmerizing
blend of flamenco, Turkish music, and Balkan and Oriental influences. Their original compositions, enriched with electronic sounds, celebrate the boundless traditions of the Mediterranean. This ensemble of five diverse artists champions a unique, non-conformist approach to multicultural musical expression. Dance is vital to their performance, with "La Caramelita," a flamenco dancer of Indian/Malaysian descent, embodying this cultural fusion.
For Qairo's leaders, travel is integral to creation. Deborah Dawson ("La Caramelita") and Alejandro Mendía met in Spain, sharing a vision for a personalized flamenco beyond the traditional path. Deborah draws from flamenco dance and its similarities with classical Indian dance, honoring her roots. Alejandro focuses on flamenco singing with Arab-Andalusian influences. Dorian Zavatta, a clarinetist and oud player, wandered the Balkans on foot, settling in Turkey for three years to absorb the local scales and melodies, gaining authentic technical prowess.
Back in Bordeaux, inspired to merge their learnings, these three artists founded Qairo. The name not only references the iconic city of Cairo but also the ancient Greek concept of "kairos"—the right, opportune moment. Soon after, they were joined by Alex Carrasco (synth bass, keyboards) and Gaétan Diaz (drums, pads), who brought contemporary urban sounds and a refined jazz touch, respectively.
In 2022 and 2023, Qairo mainly performed in Canada, leading to a national tour in 2024, featuring prestigious festivals such as Sunfest, Harrison Folk Festival, Butchart Gardens Summer Series, and Vancouver's Carnaval del Sol. This fall, they will release their debut album, a sophisticated blend of styles that seamlessly interweave to transport us on a modern Spice Route—a powerful and heartfelt flamenco chant accompanied by oud or Turkish clarinet, underscored by danceable grooves. Positioned between Israel Fernández and Balkan Beat Box, Qairo creates an imaginary city where cultures meet without prejudice and enrich each other.
