Sandy will guide you through shaping your own pūtangitangi (traditional clay flute). It's a chance to get your hands in the uku – No pressure just the feel of the whenua and joy of creating and learning.
All materials supplied. Sandy will have your piece(s) fired within 3 weeks of the workshop, and you'll be contacted when they're ready to be picked up.
Sandy Kerr is a Kaihanga Uku and resident artist here in The Incubator's Pot House. Her art centres on sculpting in clay, and she is currently exploring the full process from the ground up: digging her own uku, developing her own glazes, and incorporating patterning and texturing drawn from Te Ao Māori. She creates useful, everyday domestic pottery that carries the mauri of the places where the clay is harvested, and through her work she honours the precious gifts of kai and wai in Aotearoa. Her practice is intentionally low-impact, using a treadle wheel to stay as unplugged as possible.
