Purple Flagging The Cemeteries

As we prepare for National Wreaths Across America Day, we invite our community to help us identify and mark every veteran's grave throughout the Cemeteries of Peace Avenue.
Because our cemeteries are not national cemeteries, locating every veteran's headstone can sometimes be challenging. Not all markers display military service, and some veterans' graves may not have a veteran sticker, brass marker, or military insignia. To ensure no hero is overlooked on National Wreaths Across America Day, volunteers work together to place purple flags at each veteran's grave.
Flagging Dates:
Saturday, December 5, 2026 – 9:30 a.m.
Sunday, December 6, 2026 – 9:30 a.m.
Saturday, December 12, 2026 – 9:30 a.m.
Sunday, December 13, 2026 – 9:30 a.m.
Location:
Comal Cemetery
Volunteers will work in teams using cemetery grid maps that identify known veterans' graves. One volunteer will navigate using the maps while the other places purple flags. We use purple flags because they are the one color not used by the cemeteries, eliminating confusion and making it easy for participants to locate veterans' graves on National Wreaths Across America Day.
We are hoping for a strong turnout during the first weekend so we can mark every veteran's headstone before the second weekend. The additional dates are reserved in case of inclement weather or if more time is needed to complete the work.
If you can't join us right at 9:00 a.m., that's okay. Volunteers are welcome to arrive later and help for as little or as long as their schedule allows. Whether you can spare an hour or spend the entire morning with us, your assistance helps ensure every veteran is remembered and honored.
Students seeking volunteer or community service hours are encouraged to participate. We will gladly sign all service-hour documentation.
Together, we can ensure every veteran is located, honored, and ready to receive a wreath on National Wreaths Across America Day.
