Purbayan Chatterjee LIVE in Concert

From pure classical to fusion to being behind the hit rock version of , we are thrilled to welcome back to Calgary after many years, sitar maestro Purbayan Chatterjee. Joining him on tabla, someone who has graced our stage time and time again, Amit Kavthekar.

After a long time, we are bringing back an afternoon concert. Don't miss the rare opportunity (at least in Calgary) to listen to ragas that come with this time over the Thanksgiving long weekend. While the leaves turn golden, embrace yourself in the colours of Hindustani music with this maestro at the strings.

This event is FREE for Raga Mala Members, but all attendees require a ticket. So, if you're a member, please register for your free ticket through Eventbrite. For non-members, we charge $15 for students and seniors, and $20 for everyone else. Please bring your valid student ID if you've purchased a student ticket. Limited door tickets will be available. Artist Biographies

Purbayan Chatterjee:

Purbayan Chatterjee is one of the topmost sitar maestros of the world, belonging to the Senia Maihar Gharana founded by Baba Allauddin Khan. His gurus are his father Pt. Parthapratim Chatterjee, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, vocal training from Pt. Ajay Chakraborty and training in tabla from Pt. Anindo Chatterjee. He is a recipient of Indian president awards, Aditya Vikram Birla award, Rotary international award and many other prestigious awards.

Purbayan’s music is inspired by the sound of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee. His music combines the tone and richness of the Pt. Nikhil Banerjee style and a contemporary touch of his own urbane sensitivity. He has conceptualized the ground-breaking project Shastriya Syndicate – the first Indian Classical band with a contemporary touch, which has performed the world over. Their album “Lehar” released by Times Music in 2008 has remained the best-seller for a year and a half.

Amit Kavthekar:

Young and talented Amit Kavthekar (“GANDA-BANDH SHAGIRD” of Late Ustad Allarakha) has rhythm running in his veins. At the early age of six, he was being groomed in the art of playing tabla by the legendary Ustad Allarakha. He has also been fortunate enough to be taught tabla intricacies by Ustad Zakir Hussain - a maestro in Indian classical music an international phenomenon in the fields of percussion and world music.

Amit has played with many eminent Indian Classical Musicians such as Ustad Zakir Hussain and Sivamani on Zee TV in India, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan at Google Talks, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan at Berklee College of Music, Ustad Ashish Khan at Learnquest Festival at Regis College MA, Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta in Baithak, Boston MA, Pt. Kushal Das at MIT, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma in his Documentary directed by Jabbar Patel in India, Pt. Jasraj in his vocal recital in Pune India and many others. Recently, Amit played at the United Nations Day Concert 2018 with Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ayaan Ali Bangash and Amaan Ali Bangash as well as with the Refugee Orchestra project.
