Join us for a talk, special guest Q&A and musical event celebrating the history and legacy of punk visual style, led by punk historian, designer and writer Russ Bestley, author of The Art of Punk and Action Time Vision: Punk & Post Punk 7” Record Sleeves, editor of the journal Punk & Post-Punk and series editor for the Global Punk book series. Russ has designed exhibitions and given talks at Louder Than Words book festival (Manchester), Rebellion Punk Festival (Blackpool), the Design Museum (London) and The Punk Rock Museum (Las Vegas), among many others.He writes for Vive Le Rock magazine and has designed dozens of books, recently working with Penetration vocalist Pauline Murray on her acclaimed autobiography, Life’s A Gamble.
Russ’s latest book,Turning Revolt into Style: The Process and Practice of Punk Graphic Designcharts therelationship between amateur punk makers, major label design studios and commercial printers in thelate 1970s and early 1980s.The book centres onthe design and production of record covers, fanzines,posters, flyers, badges and press advertisements and the barriers faced by aspiring punk designers in the face of a highly regulated and conservative industry.
Russ will be joined by special guests TBC.
