From puns and wordplay to culture-specific references humour often resists easy transfer across languages. Together with established translator Jamie Chang participants will learn practical ways to approach the translation of humour and experiment with different strategies to carry comic effect across languages. The workshop will include translation exercises sharing translations and space for exchanging feedback.

About the facilitator:
Jamie Chang is a literary translator. Her translation of Kim Jiyoung Born 1982 by Cho Nam-joo was longlisted for the 2020 National Book Awards in Translated Literature. She has also translated The Wizard's Bakery by Gu Byeong-mo Concerning My Daughter by Kim Hye-jin and Great Soul of Siberia: One Man's Quest for the World's Most Elusive Tiger by Park Soo-yong.
She is the recipient of the Daesan Foundation Translation Grant and a three-time recipient of the Literature Translation Institute of Korea Grant. She lives in Nova Scotia with her wife and their dog.
