We are gathering at the Coombs Fairgrounds & Event Centre on October 27th, 2023 for an Open Steel Messer tournament. We have the gym from 1 pm officially, but I'll be around by noon setting up, so you're welcome to get there early to chat, help, and/or warm-up.We'll likely have a handful of fighters, or two, and run a Round-robin where everyone gets to battle everyone else, then if there's time left-over, we can run a finals with the top 4; otherwise, the top +/- score will win. If we get more than 8 fighters, we'll switch to a multi-pool format with eliminations, and/or use two simultaneous pits to cope with the number of fights.
All matches will be fought with Steel Messers.
Director & Judge format with honourable self-calling, with the addition of a time-limit of 120 seconds for each match. 5 exchanges per match. Points awarded at 2 per Good hit, +1 for Control or -1 for After-blow. Doubles are cumulative in the pattern: -1, -2, -3, -4... Flick or touch hits (under-rotated / under-powered) will not count, unless the point finds purchase in the thrust. Flat-hits do not count as hits, but also don't require a halt, so Clashing, Rebound, or incidental hits won't negate good plays.
This tournament is open to everyone, though if you are unable to fight with appropriate control, respect, and honour we've come to expect from HEMA-fighters, you may be disqualified.
We're expecting to have 2 club Messers, a lefty and righty, that can be used if you don't have your own, and we'll try to secure a few others just in case, but most folk have their own. You'll require standard Longsword kit: gauntlets, gorget, arm and leg guards, skirt or padded pants, helmet, and jacket. If you lack gauntlets, we have 4 club sets, so let us know (you might have to share, but we can make it work!) Also, don't forget your cup, if needed!
