PULSE is a movement focused event to practice Contact Improvisation in a class and jam format with the accompaniment of a carefully curated musical soundscape. You are invited to experiment, research, play, and develop new pathways of movement within the framework of Contact Improvisation. All levels of dance and movement experience are welcome to participate.
The evening will begin at 7pm with a facilitated class/guided warm up focused on concepts and themes related to the principles of Contact Improvisation. The warm-up is intended to provide a comfortable, welcoming space for beginners to learn some basic concepts of the form to move more fluidly into a jam setting, while providing more advanced dancers a focus in which to deepen their movement exploration.
At 7:30pm we will begin a Jam with music; either a playlist or live set. The Jam portion of the evening is a non verbal, self guided, movement-focused space to explore solo or partner dance, technique, physical listening, and improvisation.
At 9pm we will close the evening with a moment of stillness and silence together, and end with a short circle.
This is a welcoming and consent-centered environment that values curiosity, presence, and the shared practice of improvisation. Come as you are, to move, listen, connect, and explore the unfolding dance.

Facilitator Bio: Brianna Grant
Brianna has been captivated by the form of Contact Improvisation since 2012, and is fascinated by the ever unfolding layers of discovery that continue to emerge within the practice. Apart from being a thrilling, technical and physical practice, she experiences the form as being transformative, intimate, provocative, therapeutic, and healing. She approaches CI as a self discovery practice and is drawn to the somatic, subtle, playful, and theatrical states that can be accessed through deep presence, curiosity and improvisation. Her fascination with the body has lead her to study many forms over the years including, Embodied Relational Gestalt, Somatic Meditation, Breathwork, Acro Yoga, Thai Massage, Feldenkrais, Ji Shin Do, Laban Movement Analysis, and Acupuncture & Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Brianna has been facilitating CI since 2015, and has taught on Salt Spring Island, across Vancouver Island and on her travels in Nicaragua. Some of her most influential movement teachers have been Manuel Rochette, Martin Keogh, Helen Walkley, Peter Bingham, Karl Frost, Sole Medina, Ray Chung, Paul Singh and Neige Christenson.
Brianna was a core member of the Salt Spring Island Contact community for 7 years, and is now a core member of the Victoria Contact community where she offers monthly workshops and hosts a bi-weekly Contact class and Jam on Friday evenings. She is a Registered Acupuncturist, entrepreneur, dancer, herbalist, teacher, and longtime gardener and land steward, each role inspiring and informing her movement research.
