Diversity and inclusion have become the shifting point of many conversations in the school and at home. In this Salon Series we will explore ways in which we can continue to recognize our collective capacity to strengthen our practices of equity and inclusion in school and at home. While highlighting, learnings and solutions that are rooted in transformative, anti-racism, abolition, safety, and disability justice.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Each speaker will be asked a value driven question to start off the evening and will have 10-miniutes to offer insights and reflections.

THE QUESTION: What is inclusion?”

While this question may seem simple and broad, it is the foundation towards helping us determine moral and ethical opinions and values about society and the culture that exists within schools and homes. It can help us delineate where problems and imbalances of power exist.

PROMPTS:

  • Determine values around inclusion and equitable representation and support.
  • Driving empathy helps us to better understand a group or individual's experience, which in turn helps us to identify where specific injustices occur for them. (Without forcing marginalized groups to speak to sensitive areas).
  • Defining the Problem to help with setting goals, determining policy, understanding progress, and maintaining accountability.
  • Challenging biases and asking questions helps us to identify, understand, and begin the process of eliminating bias at the home and out into the world.

THE AGENDA:

  • 6:00pm – 6:20pm: An introduction to the evening, by our moderator Sarah Jamieson. A brief introduction to the evening through a trauma-sensitive lens.
  • 6:20pm – 6:30pm – Speaker 1: Heather Beach, Regional Network Coordinator for The Family Support Institute of BC (FSI)
