Public Astronomy Program on Mount Diablo
About this Event
Please join the Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society for its July 18 astronomy program at the lower summit parking lot. This month’s topic is: We Are Stardust! – How elements are made, where the iron in your blood comes from, the calcium in the bones of the coyote, and the gold in California mines, all from the lifecycles of stars.
Arrive early to safely view the Sun through telescopes. The program starts at 8 p.m. at the lower summit parking lot of Mt. Diablo State Park (enter the park at least 45 minutes earlier). Although there is no fee for this program, there is a park entrance fee.
Parking in the Lower Summit lots is limited and is First Come, First Served. If the lots are full when you arrive, you may park outside those lots, but please note:
a. Park ONLY in other designated parking areas or completely off the road.
b. Illegally parked cars are subject to ticketing or towing by Park personnel.
c. It is rare, but possible, that nearby parking will not be available.
Bring kids, binoculars, warm clothes (temperature can drop), snacks, and water. No need for a flashlight but if you must bring one, please cover it in red plastic.
Park gates are locked after sunset, and exit of the park is permitted only via escorted caravans several times during the evening through the Northgate entrance.
Astronomy program is weather dependent. Check the MDAS website www.mdas.net or call the park 925-837-2525.
