Public Archaeology

NOTICE: If you intend on registering a child aged 15 and under for Public Archaeology, there must also be a ticket purchased for an accompanying adult.

See what it is like to be an archaeologist and excavate an actual site through our Public Archaeology Program. You can help us dig and screen for artifacts in the field or wash objects with archaeologists from the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Lab. It’s a fun way for the whole family to learn about the past. Who knows what great discoveries await you?

The program runs in two sessions - morning and afternoon - on select Fridays and Saturdays in April through June and again in October and September. Morning sessions are from 9:00 to 11:30 AM. Afternoon sessions are from 12:30 to 3:00 PM.

Bring appropriate clothes for getting a little dirty and pack a lunch if you register for both morning and afternoon sessions! In the event of rain, all activities will take place in an indoor space to work with artifacts.

Children aged 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. All members of your party must be registered as well (including adults accompanying children). Space is limited and registration is mandatory. It is an approximately 5-10 minute walk on a paved path from parking to the excavation site - see map below.

Price:
$4 per session (or $8 for whole day) for Friends members
$5 per session (or $10 for whole day) for non-members

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum reserves the right to cancel any program or event due to insufficient enrollment or extreme weather. If JPPM cancels an event, all registrants will be notified and all registration fees will be fully refunded.

If you need to withdraw for personal reasons, 10 days’ notice is required for a full refund. No refunds will be issued for no-shows or withdrawals within 10 days of the program.
