We are pleased to welcome Ben Lemmond, the new Research Mycologist at the Burke Herbarium, as the speaker at our October membership meeting. Ben will talk about one of his passions, truffles, and what his new role at the Herbarium means to the PSMS.Truffles include a broad array of fungi that have one thing in common: dispersal primarily by animals. Aside from that, truffles are astonishingly diverse in terms of their evolutionary origins, morphological and aromatic characteristics, and their symbiotic associations with plants and other organisms. Ben’s talk will explore some of the latest science on truffles as well as unanswered questions in truffle biology and evolution. His presentation will also highlight the importance of fungal collections and outline some current projects and opportunities for us to get involved in a new chapter of collections-based research the Burke Herbarium at the University of Washington (WTU).
Dr. Ben Lemmond is a mycologist who specializes in ectomycorrhizal fungi, truffles, and fungal evolution and ecology. Ben joined the Burke Herbarium at the University of Washington as a Research Mycologist in September of this year. Ben is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, received his undergraduate BA&Sc degree at the Evergreen State College, a M.Sc. in Plant Bi-ology at the University of Vermont, a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology at the University of Florida, and a postdoc at the University of California in Berkeley. When he’s not collecting fungi, you can find Ben playing beach volleyball, playing piano, or hanging out with his new pup (and truffle dog in training) Luca.
Meeting Format: The meeting is open to the public and will be offered both in person and via Zoom for those unable to attend physically. Benjamin Lemmond has graciously agreed to allow PSMS to record this presentation for later viewing on the PSMS website (members only).
