Thirty days before the November 3 election, we're gathering on the oldest public ground in Pinellas County.
Philippe Park has been holding this shoreline for over a thousand years — home of the Tocobaga capital, site of a National Historic Landmark temple mound, and the high ground a family climbed to survive the hurricane surge of 1848. A third of that mound washed away that night.
Pinellas has always known that healthy shoreline and protected green space are the difference between riding out a storm and losing everything. In Florida's most densely populated county, where more than half of residents live in a floodplain, that lesson has never mattered more.
