Symphonic heartbreak with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet & pianist Tom De Beuckelaer performing Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto.A year after making their stage debut with Rachmaninov's third Piano Concerto, the KCB Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Wouter Versavel, returns alongside Belgian pianist Tom De Beuckelaer.
Picture a chance encounter between two musical giants!
Many years had passed since a young Prokofiev, still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, attended a concert dedicated to the memory of Alexander Scriabin. Rachmaninov, the esteemed Moscow idol, was the performer that evening, playing Scriabin's intricate pieces. Despite some criticism from St. Petersburg enthusiasts, Prokofiev, in his characteristic straightforward manner, expressed his admiration to Rachmaninov, stating that the performance "was not bad at all." "What do you mean — 'not bad'?" Rachmaninov asked with a touch of indignation, turning his back on Prokofiev. The exchange captures the nuances of their personalities—Rachmaninov, the revered master with a commitment to perfection, and Prokofiev, the bold and audacious young composer, unafraid to speak his mind.
Prokofiev's odyssey began in 1918 as he left Russia amidst the emergence of the Soviet Union. After a brief stint in the United States, he found his artistic haven in Paris, where he flourished as both a pianist and composer. Similarly, Sergej Rachmaninov, sought refuge in America after the Russian Revolution.
Join us for an unforgettable concert filled with the timeless melodies of Prokofiev and Rachmaninov.
