The Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst continue their exploratory journey of Prokofiev’s symphonies with the composer’s Fourth, a work he initially wrote while touring the United States in 1930 but revisited 17 years later at the time of intense Soviet cultural crackdown. Haydn’s turbulent Symphony No. 52, one of his last Sturm und Drang (storm and stress) symphonies, sets the tone for the program.
