ABOUT PROJECT NOORDHOEKED
The PN team is made up of three men from the local communities of Red Hill and Masiphumelele. I (Karoline Hanks) manage the team on the three days a week that we work and my partner (Filippo Faralla) assists with the account-keeping/salary payments.
Our key objectives are:
Keep Noordhoek beach pristine as possible (free of ocean plastic, dog poo and other trash)
Maintain the Noordhoek beach car park (landscaping, gardening)
Maintain Kakapo the wire whale – a wonderful initiative which encourages beach walkers to collect plastic on their walks, in their own time. There is also a plastic awareness drive attached to this.
We do regular cleanups of the roadsides of Noordhoek, and remove up to 25 bags of trash a week.
We have built horse paths to reduce dune erosion, extended the beach boardwalk, restored the mountain trail network on Chapmans Peak and built new steps at the trail head.
We have built a total of 7 Ecobrick benches in Noordhoek – each one contains up to 1000 Ecobricks, which is the equivalent of 500kg of plastic unrecyclable waste.
We collect up to 30 buckets of wet waste from our local business hub (Noordhoek Farm Village) every week, and the team manages a large compost centre, where this is processed into compost. The team sells bags of compost to the community and the cash goes straight to them to help put food on the table. They have learnt to make compost from what would otherwise go to landfill and are now benefiting from this financially.
The project is driven by a lot of passion and a desire to retain as much ecological integrity in this ever-growing community of Noordhoek (where I have lived since 1993!). I am passionate about waste management and trying to find ways for all of us to reduce our collective waste footprint. This informs much of the work we do in our project.
