Join us to learn about Nipmuc mishoons, or dugout canoes, recovered on the silty bottom of Lake Quinsigamond and local mishoon traditions.
About this Event

For nearly 400 years, several dugout canoes have rested quietly on the silty bottom of Lake Quinsigamond, awaiting the return of Indigenous paddlers. Not until 2001 would Nipmuc descendants return to them and become the first Indigenous community in Massachusetts history to secure an archaeological reconnaissance permit from the Commonwealth’s Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources.

Join us as Hassanamisco Nipmuc Band member and Project Mishoon Director, Cheryl Stedtler shares the history and future of the project. We’ll also hear from Waban Webquish, Nipmuc-Wampanoag culture keeper, about Natick ecology and mishoons.

Complimentary Native Cuisine will be served. First come, first served.

This event is FREE and open to all. Registration Required.

Thank you to our sponsor, Middlesex Savings Bank Charitable Foundaiton.
