In the second session of our Project Delivery Series, we will be exploring Progressive Design Build, an alternative delivery method that is increasing in popularity with owners.

For architects and design consultants, Progressive Design Build brings some fundamental shifts in contractual relationships between owners and contractors. It offers great opportunity for collaboration and for an aligned design and preconstruction workflow. It can also bring challenges in understanding roles and responsibilities and in communication flow between all parties.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has been a leader in the implementation of Progressive Design Build. All recent projects, be it Terminal 2, Terminal 3 Boarding Area E, the Harvey Milk Terminal, Long Term Parking, and many more, have been delivered using this approach.

Judi Mosqueda, Chief Development Officer at SFO

Judi Mosqueda oversees SFO’s Design and Construction, including Architecture, Engineering, Procurement and Contracts, and Project Management. She is responsible for the successful implementation of SFO’s $7B capital improvement program that includes the renowned Harvey Milk Terminal 1, Grand Hyatt at SFO, Air train extension and Long-Term Parking improvements. Judi is a licensed landscape architect with 30 years of experience in design and construction. She has a nuanced understanding of integrated project delivery and the progressive design-build contracting method. At SFO, Judi’s passion for place-making guides her delivery of exceptional projects.

Ryan Fetters, AIA, Principal at Gensler

An Aviation Leader with a background in retail design, Ryan has designed some of Gensler’s most notable experience-driven projects. He strives to bridge the gap between culture and technology to ultimately create community-centered spaces that incorporate the best ideas across project types

Wayne Campbell, Design Integrator with Webcor Builders

As Webcor’s Project Director for Design, Wayne orchestrates multi-disciplinary teams on large-scale aviation and healthcare projects. His role is about creating harmony, and balancing creative aspirations with practical constraints, and ensuring clear communication across all stakeholders. Wayne believes that great projects are born from great partnerships, and he strives to cultivate an environment where innovation thrives and every voice is heard.

Matthew Burdette, Senior Construction Project Manager, Plant Construction

Matt is finishing up his first Progressive Design Build Project at SFO’s MLTP Treatment Plant. A proponent of collaborative team success, Matt’s prior projects as Project Manager include local landmarks such as the renovation of Building 12 at Pier 70 in the Port of San Francisco, and the Presidio Theater renovation. At SFO, Matt led the design, engineering and construction team to a successful outcome of a complex renovation project.

Liz Ranieri, FAIA, LEEP AP

Liz co-founded Kuth Ranieri Architects with Byron in 1990. The bi-coastal firm has earned a national reputation for expressive, site-specific, sustainable architecture, planning, and design. Her collaborative team works across scales and on various project types, from public park pavilions to community museums and airports. As a gifted communicator, Liz has led presentations, workshops and community outreach on public projects with complex stakeholder groups to grown consensus and shepherd design goals. She has taught at California College of the Arts, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and as a Friedman Professor for the Master of Architecture program at UC Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design and at UC Berkeley’s Fung Institute for Engineering. Liz serves on RISD’s Department of Architecture’s Advisory Council and was the Presidential Nominee on the MIT Corporation Visiting Committee for the Department of Architecture (2012-2020). Her firm’s work has been recognized with numerous accolades, including AIA awards at local, regional, and national levels, winning the Architectural Leagues’ Young Architects & Emerging Voices awards, and Architectural Record’s Design Vanguard. Liz was elevated to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in the object of design. Kuth Ranieri Architects, the firm’s monograph, was published by The Graham Foundation & Princeton Architectural Press.

Learning Objectives (1.5 LUs)

1. Describe Progressive Design Build as an alternative project delivery method, including opportunities for collaboration between Architects, Engineers, the Design Builder and Core Subcontractors. The panelists will share their experience of working together throughout all design and construction phases of their projects as an integrated team

1. Compare Progressive Design Build to other project delivery methods such as traditional Design Bid Build, or CM/GC. The panelists will provide their experience in the various delivery methods and offer opportunity to explore these with the audience.

1. The panel will identify challenges of the Progressive Design Build delivery method. Especially for teams that have no or little design build experience, the idea of working for a Contractor as client and to not have direct access to the client as decision maker can be challenging. The panelists will identify and review some of these challenges and answer questions about how they may be overcome, and what to look for to create a successful project

1. The audience will be able to use the information provided in the discussion and apply this to their own future Progressive Design Build project teams.
