Professor Taz Goddard-Fuller Inaugural Lecture

Title of Lecture:

“What I've learned from the learners: Reflections from 25 years (and counting...) in Higher Education” will reflect upon their experiences as student, tutor, scholar and researcher during their various roles in Higher Education"

Biography:

Professor Taz Goddard-Fuller (they / them) from the University School of Medicine will deliver their inaugural lecture on Monday May 13th in the Central Teaching Hub.

Taz graduated from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Sociology, which was followed by a Masters in Social Research Methods from the Open University. A mixture of University roles including part time tutor, security officer and librarian followed, alongside an array of non-academic jobs including playing drums in a touring band, running a pub and working in commercial market research for GFK-NOP.

Taz returned to full-time academic life in 2007 at the University of Leeds, working as the Research Officer for the ALPS-CETL, (Assessment and Learning in Practice Settings Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning). Working across 5 Higher Education Institutions and 16 Health and Social Care Professions, this gave Taz a unique opportunity to undertake their PhD in Medical Education, which explored professional identity development in the context of interprofessional education and collaborative practice. The topic of identity development and its links to the concept of professionalism and student behaviour remain one of Taz’s main research interests, culminating in 2022 in an invitation to contribute to the ten-yearly “State of Science” edition of the Medical Education journal on the topic of professionalism. The ALPS-CETL was also one of the first initiatives to explore mobile learning and assessment, which gave rise to the second of Taz’s long-standing research interests; technology enhanced learning.

Taz joined the University of Liverpool in 2016 as Deputy Director of Studies, before moving to be Director of Studies and most recently Vice Dean of Learning and Scholarship within the School of Medicine. In more recent years, Taz has developed an academic approach towards their work in the field of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), resulting in several national and international invitations to speak on EDI in Assessment.
