2024 Professional Women's LuncheonJoin us for an empowering and inspiring luncheon featuring Dr. Jeannette Loutsch where she will be talking to us about the Jean McLaughlin Outdoor Education & Research Center at the USAO Habitat.
The Jean McLaughlin Outdoor Education & Research Center (JMOERC), located at the USAO Habitat, was first envisioned by USAO faculty in 2015. Using just PowerPoint, Drs. Rachel Jones and Jason Shaw drafted the initial design, much of which remains in the final structure. Through a generous donation from the McLaughlin family in late 2019, this vision became a reality. Additional support from the Kirkpatrick Foundation funded educational supplies and equipment. Construction was completed in late 2022, and the center hosted its inaugural outreach series, “USAO K-12 Teacher Outdoor Education,” that fall. University courses, such as the Principles of Ecology Laboratory and Professor Blake Morgan’s Oil Painting class, were among the first to utilize the space.
JMOERC features a fully functional laboratory classroom, extensive field equipment storage, and a climate-controlled greenhouse for research by USAO students and faculty. Its mission is to support university courses focused on environmental and wildlife topics, provide outdoor education for K-12 educators and students, and host community groups interested in Oklahoma’s ecosystems and landscapes.
Dr. Jeannette Loutsch, a USAO faculty member since 2007 and associate professor of biology, is a key contributor to JMOERC’s success. She teaches a wide range of courses, including Virology, Microbiology, Botany, Genetics, and Immunology, along with their associated labs. Her extensive publications include Cloning and Sequence Analysis of Murine Cytomegalovirus Protease and Capsid Assembly Protein Genes, Expression and Characterization of Recombinant Murine Cytomegalovirus Protease, Ophthalmic Antiviral Therapies, and Collagen Shields for Ocular Drug Delivery.
Dr. Loutsch also serves as an advisor for Colleges Against Cancer, was a speaker at the Festival of Arts and Ideas, and participated in the V-Day College Campaign. Before joining USAO, she held positions as an assistant professor at Arkansas State University, a post-doctoral fellow at the LSU Eye Center and Monsanto/Searle Infectious Disease Research Center, and a medical technologist at multiple healthcare facilities.
She frequently donates her time to lead workshops and community outreach programs at JMOERC, fostering a greater understanding of Oklahoma’s natural environment.
