PRISM Speakers: Saving bats and storing data

PRISM Exeter's Speakers series returns for International Day of LGBTQIA+ people in STEM 2024 with talks from Dr Orly Razgour and Joe Pady.

They will talk about their experiences in STEMM* as members of the LGBTQIA+** community and provide you with tantalising insights into their fields of research.

(*STEMM is a catch-all term for the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine)(**LGBTQIA+ refers to people who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual or are otherwise not cisgender and/or not straight/heterosexual)

Online-only attendance is free. A live feed displaying the speaker and their slides will be broadcast to Zoom. Both in-person and virtual attendees will be able to contribute to the Q&A with the speakers after their talks.

Please note that the talks will be recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel after the event. Audience questions will be removed from the recordings to preserve audience anonymity. Original recordings will only be seen by the PRISM Exeter coordination team and will be deleted within 30 days of the event.

Associate Professor in Global Change Ecology, University of Exeter.

"I am an Associate Professor in Global Change Ecology and Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Biosciences, University of Exeter. I am also the Chair of the British Ecological Society Climate Change Group and a trustee of the Bat Conservation Trust. My research integrates genomic, ecological and modelling approaches to understand biodiversity responses to global environmental changes. My research is applied in nature, aiming to provide the evidence base for managing our environment and conserving biodiversity.

In this session, I will discuss research carried out in my group and in collaboration with conservation practitioners to better understand how bats are responding to climate change and habitat loss, and how we are using insights from our genetic work to inform conservation. I will also discuss my experience as a queer person and a parent in academia."

Postdoctoral Research Associate, University of Exeter

"I completed an MSci in Natural Sciences at the University of Exeter in 2019. Following this, I carried out a PhD at Exeter researching phase-change memory devices for use in flexible integrated circuits. Now I am a post-doctoral researcher at Exeter, modelling devices for optical in-memory computing."

About Joe's talk:

In 1975, Intel cofounder Gordon Moore predicted that the number of transistors able to be fit onto a silicon chip would double every two years. Since then, this has roughly held true, leading to a continuous increase in the capacity of electronic memory. However, in recent years there have been exciting developments into new kinds of data storage technology. This talk will give a brief overview of the history of data storage. Following this, Joe will discuss recent research into new memory technologies and the importance of looking beyond the ideas of the past.

Exeter Library is located in the heart of Exeter City Centre, within walking distance of both Exeter Central train station and Exeter bus station. The Rougemont Room is on the second floor - see the Exeter Library website for a map of the layout. Ramp access is available to the front entrance of the library and lift access is available to reach the Rougemont Room and the adjoining toilets. Event attendees will be the only people inside the library during the event. The toilet facilities are individual gender-neutral cubicle units. Disabled access toilet facilities are also available.

PRISM Exeter's Speakers events series was established to showcase and celebrate the incredible work of LGBTQ+ people in STEMM as well as game-changing diversity and inclusion initiatives from across the UK. These events run three times a year, typically in February, July, and November to coincide with LGBTQ+ History Month in the UK, PRISM Exeter's birthday, and LGBTQ+ STEM Day, respectively.
