Print with Flowers: Natural Dye Socks Workshop with Natalie Sullivan
About this Event
Class Description
Discover the art of Eco Printing and create a one-of-a-kind pair of botanical dyed socks in this hands-on workshop. Using leaves, flowers, and natural pigments, you'll learn how to transfer the beauty of plants directly onto fabric, creating unique patterns inspired by the natural world.
Throughout the class, you'll explore the fundamentals of natural dyeing, including how to prepare fibers for color, the role of mordants in the dye process, and how iron can be used to alter and deepen botanical prints. You'll also learn which leaves and flowers produce the most vibrant results and how to thoughtfully arrange botanical materials to create your own custom designs.
Guests will create and eco-print a pair of wearable botanical socks to take home. Please note that socks will still be damp at the end of class and will continue to develop as they dry.
No prior experience is necessary. All materials are included!
Sock sizes available:
- Small: Women’s sizes 6–9
- Large: Women’s size 10 through Men’s size 12
Come experiment with color, plants, and printmaking while learning a sustainable textile technique that transforms everyday materials into wearable art.
MEET THE MAKER:
Natalie Sullivan is a fiber artist based in Richmond, Virginia, whose work is rooted in observation of the natural world. Her sculptural weavings bend, intertwine, and curve off the wall, creating a play between what is revealed and what remains hidden while echoing the organic forms found in nature.
Her line of home goods and accessories brings the beauty of the natural world into everyday objects. Using flowers and leaves as her source of pigment, Sullivan creates intricate botanically dyed prints and one-of-a-kind textiles shaped by seasonality, a love of gardening, and a hands-on, intuitive process.
Sullivan holds an MFA from Pratt Institute and a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is an instructor at Visual Arts Center of Richmond. Her work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show, Library of Virginia, Gallery5, and Craft + Design.
