Tetrapak printmaking is an acid free and non-toxic process where we reuse cartons such as juice boxes, protein shakes, soup stock, oat milk, etc. as the plates to create prints. There are a number of ways to inscribe marks into this surface to create your image. Differene line weights can be achieved in this method, from very fine to thick and bold, to create nice flowing imagery with an etching needle. Solid tone can also be achieved by simply peeling away the metallic coating. Once the plate is complete, force ink into the recesses of the plate, wipe off the excess from the top surface and run it through an intaglio press against a sheet of dampened paper.
Participants will take home a few prints of their own creation.
About the Instructor
Samsam Elmi is a first generation Somali artist and educator based in Toronto. She graduated with an honours BFA in Visual Arts from York University. Her practice revolves around utilizing various printmaking methodologies with an emphasis on intaglio and screenprinting. Although working within a traditional medium, Elmi’s approach is experimental. Weaving between analogue and photographic, gestural and static, abstraction and figurative; her prints are ephemeral in quality touching on themes of duality, fragmentation and memory.
