New England, 1917. Students Lionel and David bond over a shared love of folk music. They begin a passionate romantic relationship, but their time together is cut short when David is drafted into the army. Two years later, Lionel receives a letter from David, asking him to accompany him on a research trip to record the folk songs of America.
