Celebrate Pride and Disability Pride Month with a special screening of The History of Sound, a moving story of love, memory, and belonging.
About this Event

Join us for a special screening of The History of Sound (2025), a sweeping romantic drama directed by Oliver Hermanus and starring Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor. Marking Pride Month and Disability Pride Month, this event is delivered in partnership with The Proud Network RBKC, creating space to reflect on LGBTQ+ experiences, identity, and community.

Set against the backdrop of World War I and its aftermath, the film follows Lionel and David, two young men who meet while studying music in 1917. Reunited after the war, they embark on a journey across rural Maine to record and preserve traditional folk songs, deepening a relationship that will shape the rest of their lives. Spanning decades, The History of Sound is a moving exploration of love, memory, grief, and the enduring power of music.

Premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for the Palme d'Or, the film is adapted by Ben Shattuck from his acclaimed short stories The History of Sound and Origin Stories. Geraldine Brooks, Pulitzer Prize-winning and New York Times bestselling author of Horse, describes Shattuck's work as placing him "firmly among the very finest of our storytellers."

In the original collection, twelve interconnected stories span three centuries, revealing how love, loss, memory, and history continue to shape the present. Through rediscovered recordings, journals, paintings, and family stories, Shattuck creates a rich tapestry of human experience that celebrates enduring connections and the search for home.
