About this Event
Across religious mythologies—Jewish, Christian, and Islamic—Eve emerges as the first woman to dare, to seek, to question. Yet, her courage and curiosity are met with punishment, her pursuit of forbidden knowledge condemned. For centuries, this narrative has suppressed women’s wisdom and power. In Beyond Words: Women of Mother Earth, Maria Daniel Balcazar dismantles these ancient myths, boldly reclaiming women’s autonomy and subjectivity.
Inspired by the fierce poetry of Julia de Burgos, Balcazar’s images ignite a dynamic conversation between word and vision, honoring feminine archetypes across cultures and centuries. De Burgos’ passionate call for authenticity, freedom, and compassionate struggle resonates through Balcazar’s work, reimagining iconic women as symbols of resilience, love, and transformation.
Beyond Words: Women of Mother Earth, curated by Carl-Philippe Juste, is a vibrant celebration of women’s voices—especially those, like Eve, who have defied silence and shaped history. Through Balcazar’s lens, Eve becomes the wellspring of creation, embodying the boundless life and power of Mother Earth herself.
Don’t miss an inspiring artist talk with acclaimed fine art photographer and iWitness Fellow Maria Daniel Balcazar—an artist whose evocative work reimagines feminine archetypes and celebrates women’s stories across cultures on Sunday, March 8, 2026 from 2 p.m till 4 p.m. inside Little Haiti Cultural Complex gallery space.
Balcazar’s award-winning photography has been exhibited internationally, and her lens brings poetic vision and powerful storytelling to every frame. She will be joined by a special guest (to be revealed at the event), with the conversation moderated by iWitness Director of Research Dr. Rebecca Friedman. Join us inside the Little Haiti Cultural Center Gallery for an unforgettable evening of art, insight, and connection.
