Preventing Harassment In The Workplace

Harassment involves a pattern of disruptive, threatening, or intimidating behavior intended to bother, intimidate, or demean an individual. It typically includes unwelcome contact that persists despite requests to cease. Harassment can constitute either a criminal or civil matter, depending on the nature of the conduct. Criminal harassment may result in legal penalties such as fines or imprisonment, while civil remedies may involve the affected individual pursuing legal action, including against the employer, to seek financial compensation.

This session will address the importance of preventing workplace harassment to avoid costly legal actions and significant damages, including multi-million-dollar awards.

Participants will learn about relevant federal and state laws that protect employees from discrimination and harassment based on race, gender, age, disability, and other protected categories. The session will clarify what constitutes harassment and how unwelcome verbal or physical conduct can create a hostile work environment when it is severe or pervasive.

Attendees will gain insights into recognizing unwelcome behavior and understanding how perceptions of conduct can vary among individuals. It is important to note that anyone, including supervisors, can be perceived as a harasser and may face associated stigma and liability.

The session will also cover the risks associated with email and social media communications, highlighting best practices and legal responsibilities to prevent harassment and maintain a respectful workplace environment.
