The Preucil School of Music is a non-profit community music school based in Iowa City, Iowa, serving around 600 students with a faculty of 37. Founded in 1975 by Doris Preucil, the school grew from a Suzuki violin programme established in 1963 and now offers a comprehensive curriculum including strings, piano, voice, harp, flute, music theory, pedagogy, ensembles, and early childhood education. Housed in a historic former Czechoslovakian Meeting Hall built in 1900, the school has become a cultural cornerstone in a city known for its appreciation of the arts.
The Preucil School String Orchestra (PSSO) is the school’s most advanced ensemble, known for its high level of artistry and professionalism. The orchestra has performed widely across the United States and internationally, appearing at major conferences and on television. Its international tours have taken the group to over ten countries, earning accolades such as First Prize at the Vienna International Festival for Music and Youth. In 2013, the orchestra performed for the First Lady of China in Beijing - an honour reflecting its global reputation.
Conductor Carey Bostian is a distinguished cellist and educator, serving on the conducting faculty at the Preucil School. He is Artistic Director of Red Cedar Chamber Music and formerly Principal Cellist of Orchestra Iowa. He also conducts the Iowa City Community String Orchestra and Sinfonia Nolte. Carey holds advanced degrees in cello performance and conducting from the University of Iowa and is part of a rich musical lineage tracing back to Dmitri Mitropoulos. Alongside his wife, violinist Miera Kim, he has contributed significantly to preserving important musical archives, further enriching the legacy of classical music.
