A community workshop inspired by the tradition of women gathering around the fire on the eve of St Luke’s Fair to make Rutherglen sour cakes
About this Event

A warm, relaxed 90-minute community workshop inspired by the tradition of women gathering around the fire on the eve of St Luke’s Fair to make Rutherglen sour cakes together. Participants will hear a little about this local tradition before exploring clay through pressing, rolling and creating textures and patterns. Each person will make their own 3D clay piece, inspired by the idea of sharing, gathering and passing things on.

Alongside their individual work, participants will take part in a simple shared “press and pass” activity, echoing how the dough was traditionally passed from woman to woman. The workshop is an opportunity to slow down, meet others, share stories and create something meaningful together, with everyone’s individual pieces becoming part of a wider collection celebrating community and connection.

This workshop is led by artist Juliet Watt. Juliet is a community-based artist and sculptor with deep-rooted connections to Rutherglen. Her work explores people, place and community, and has been exhibited in Glasgow and London. Her projects include Lavinia, a living sculpture created for Grow 73 in Overtoun Park. Juliet is delighted to be part of the Rutherglen 900 celebrations

All ages welcome. Free, but book in advance via Eventbrite.
