Get to know the candidates for Lakewood’s Board of Education at this special Candidates’ Forum. On November 4, Lakewood voters will elect two members to Lakewood’s five-member school board, which is the authority governing Lakewood City Schools, Lakewood’s public school district.
At this special “Meet the School Board Candidates Forum,” community members will have the opportunity to hear from those seeking the two seats on the Lakewood Board of Education, ask questions, and weigh in on issues affecting our walkable public school system. All four candidates have been invited to participate. As of today’s date, two have accepted the invitation - Monica Bruaw and Katie Slife Rustad.
Residents will have the opportunity to get to know the school board candidates in a casual family pizza party mingling session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by formal questions and deep engagement on key issues facing the district from 7:40 to 8:30 p.m. Pizza and beverages are provided.
To allow for a focused and productive conversation, we prefer that young children are not in the room for the second portion, but they are welcome to play outside or on the playground supervised by another grownup that you bring along. Attendees are welcome to come to the first part, second part, or both!
This event comes at a critical moment: Lakewood’s Board of Education is on the precipice of voting on October 20th on whether to close and repurpose one or more neighborhood elementary schools, sparking ongoing community interest in transparency, walkability, good governance, and strategic planning. The election for two school board seats will follow on November 4th.
