Having Urban Bush Women on the Presenting Series has been a dream deferred. The timing is perfect for their debut with This Is Risk—an evening-length dance theater program with live music that goes straight to the heart. Known for 40 years for centering Black women's voices, bodies, and lives through revolutionary performances, the company invites audiences into a space where how you move becomes a testimony, rhythm becomes resistance, and art becomes a catalyst for truth and defying categorization.
This Is Risk features four iconic works from 1945 to 2025, honoring UBW's 40th anniversary: Visible, Blues Medicine (Blues Medicine, Hard Time Blues, Blues Melody), Batty Moves, and Shelter. Each piece carries its emotional weight—from the joy and pain in Blues Medicine, the fearless celebration of womanhood in Batty Moves, and the raw, aching need for protection in Shelter. These works bear witness, demand our presence, and ask us to feel more deeply and see more clearly.
This Is Risk is unfiltered, urgent, and alive, a performance that speaks to identity, justice, and joy.
