Preparing California for the Older Workforce Boom
About this Event
By 2040, 22% of Californians will be 65 or older, up 14% from 2020. This shift is reshaping what workers need and how the state can best support them. Is California prepared? Join the California Policy Lab (CPL) and the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) as we present new research on older workers and discuss the path forward for policymakers. CPL will share findings on the economic circumstances and workforce experiences of older Californians, which are informing updates to California’s Master Plan for Aging. PPIC will share new projections on how the state’s older workforce is expected to change.
Following the presentations, a panel of policymakers, practitioners, and experts will discuss the implications of these trends, gaps in current policies and programs, and opportunities to better assist aging workers in California. A Q&A session will follow.
Older Workers in the California Economy is a collaboration between the California Department of Aging, the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency, AARP Foundation, and the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office.
The California Policy Lab is a nonpartisan, applied research institute at the University of California that partners with government agencies to use data and research to address some of California’s most pressing public policy challenges.
