Legacy in the Library: Celebrating Nell McCafferty 1944 - 2024

Legacy in the Library is an annual series at the National Library of Ireland. It pays tribute to Irish literary figures who have died in the preceding year, focusing on their holdings in the National Library’s collections. Their families are central to these tributes.  

The final instalment of 2025's Legacy in the Library series,  this film celebrates the life of Nell McCafferty, the acclaimed  activist and journalist.  Director of the National Library of Ireland, Dr Audrey Whitty shares insights into Nell’s work held by the NLI alongside exclusive footage of her Dublin home with her archive and library.

Nell’s sister Carmel and her niece and literary executor Muire McCallion share their selection of her writing, and memories in conversation with Dr Sinéad McCoole, NLI Head of Exhibitions, Learning and Programming, with  Legacy in the Library: Celebrating Nell McCafferty 1944-2024 enabling us to share this reflection with National Library of Ireland audiences near and far.
