About this Event

Based on an 18-month collaboration between Professor Mark de Rond and director, David Osit, the film currently holds a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, for its 'searing and intellectually rigorous examination of the motives behind public justice…'.

Professor de Rond will host Osit for the Q&A session directly after the screening, offering an intimate opportunity to interrogate these issues further.

What to expect?

Predators is an award-winning new documentary by the American filmmaker David Osit. It re-examines the popularity of the controversial TV series 'To Catch A Predator' to show how easily righteous fury can bleed into exploitation. It interrogates our love of participatory punishment and the appeal of a 'simpler' world populated by people who are archetypal rather than unique.

Having premiered at Sundance, the film was released in cinemas worldwide in October and on the streaming platform Paramount Plus in December, taking top spot in the first week of its release. The Guardian gave it 5 stars and lauded it as "one of the best nonfiction films of the year". Other reviewers have described it as "stark, simple and blessedly to the point" (Little White Lies), "brilliant. Measured, nuanced and finally gut-punching (Variety), "straddles various lines, and perspectives, with impressive confidence" (The Daily Beast) and "absolutely fascinating" (Rolling Stone).

Speakers

David Osit is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning filmmaker based in New York. Previous works include 'Mayor' (2020), a portrait of a Palestinian politician navigating the Israeli occupation of the West Bank; and 'Thank you for playing', a testament to the ability of art and technology to document profound experiences in the modern age.

Mark de Rond worked closely with David Osit for over 18 months to provide evidence, understanding and perspective on the issues discussed, and this guiding role is one he also plays in the film itself, as mentioned in many reviews: “I started to see [Mark] as a voice of the filmmaker, before I myself had a voice yet in the film,” said David Osit.

Prior to the documentary’s release, de Rond's book, ‘Dark Justice: Inside the World of Paedophile Hunters’ (CUP, February 2025, available to purchase) received a 5-star review from The Telegraph and 8 pages of coverage in The Times Magazine. The book details de Rond's observations during 4 years embedded within paedophile hunter gangs, which were in turn a basis for the collaboration on the film.
