About this Event
Join biologists and natural resource professionals from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Clemson Extension, and the South Carolina Trappers Association for a full-day workshop focused on predator management in South Carolina’s forested, agricultural, and rural landscapes. This program will examine the ecological role of predators, predator-related impacts on wildlife, livestock, and ecosystem management objectives, as well as practical approaches for managing predator conflicts.
Classroom and field sessions will provide both biological context and applied management information relevant to forestry, wildlife, and other natural resource professionals. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact directly with experienced trappers, wildlife biologists, and Extension personnel while discussing predator ecology, legal considerations, and field-based management techniques.
Time:
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Program runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Agenda (10 am to 4 pm):
- 10 am - 12 pm: Morning Presentations - Andrew Jamison (CU Extension Wildlife Damage Associate) & Jay Butfiloski (SCDNR Biologist and Furbearer Program Coordinator)
- 12 pm – 1 pm: Lunch
- 1 pm – 4 pm: Afternoon Session - Presenter: Joe Leonard (SC Trappers Association President)
Morning Classroom Sessions Include:
- Common predator species in South Carolina
- Predator ecology and common predator-related impacts on wildlife populations, livestock, and land management objectives
- Predator risks and benefits
- Predator management strategies and decision-making considerations
- Rules, regulations, and legal considerations for predator control in South Carolina
- Current predator damage trends and management issues relevant to natural resource professionals
Afternoon Outdoor Sessions Include:
- Equipment overview (e.g., selection, safety, and operation)
- Trap setup, implementation, and removal in field settings
- Demonstration of practical predator management techniques
- Hands-on practice and discussion with experienced professionals
Driving Directions/Location: The morning session will be held at the Pee Dee REC Auditorium. The afternoon session will be held at the Pee Dee REC Pavilion. The front gate will remain open while attendees are arriving on site and there will be signs directing people to the main building from 2200 Pocket Rd, Florence, SC 29506. Parking is available in front of the facility.
Price: Maximum capacity is 50 people. Admission is $15 per person.
