Join us during KCBW 2025 for a fresh look at Kalamazoo’s rich history of pre-Prohibition brewing and distilling. We’ll dig into the earliest known beer and whiskey makers in our fair city, with a close eye on those in the nearby neighborhood. We’ll have a look at the people and places behind the products from the 1830s until local option brought the industry to a halt in 1915.

Bio:
Keith Howard is a digital preservation specialist at the Kalamazoo Public Library, and a former instructor of business communication and information technology at Western Michigan University. He is a two-time WMU graduate and is passionate about exploring and documenting local history. He’s a writer, a postcard collector, a bit of a foodie, and a self-confessed music junkie. Keith lives in Oshtemo with his dog, Benson.
