Pre-Clinical OSCE Teaching: Session 3 - Heart Sounds and ECG

Learning Objectives:

• To be familiar with the principles of heart sounds, including their physiological relationship to the cardiac valves and cardiac cycle.
• To understand the methods of auscultation, and the differences in audibility and timing between heart sounds.

• To understand the principles of the cardiac conduction system and describe its relationship to normal physiological functioning.
• To know the steps of how to record an ECG, including where each electrode is placed.
• To be able to interpret an ECG, including identifying the key features and how they relate to the cardiac conduction system.

• To be introduced to the concept of stenosis and regurgitation, and how this may impact murmurs.
