An evening of Bharatanatyam and Kathak, this program celebrates the enduring flow of tradition and the nurturing spirit of motherhood, as art and emotion are passed from one generation to the next.
A meditation on continuity, tradition, and the multifaceted essence of motherhood, this evening unites two distinguished classical dance performances that illuminate how art and emotion are passed from one generation to the next.
The program opens with Pravahita, a 60-minute Bharatanatyam journey led by Dr Sucheta Bhide Chapekar and Arundhati Patwardhan, accompanied by a live orchestra and featuring three generations of dancers from one family. Rooted in Marathi compositions, an area of profound study for Dr Chapekar, Pravahita embodies the concept of pravaha, or the seamless flow of tradition. The repertoire spans rare gems like Tandava Nritya Kari Vinayaka by Saint Ramdas, Dr. Chapekar’s original Krishna Kautukam, and a specially presented Varnam from the Tanjavur Nritya Prabandha. Through evocative padams such as Ragavu Kashi and Kulande Ganapati, the performance beautifully expresses vatsalya bhava, exploring the nuances of maternal love. The evening crescendos with a vibrant Tillana and a devotional bhajan, celebrating the creative continuity that links generations.
The experience continues with Parampara Pravaha, a Kathak duet by Guru Marami Medhi and Meghranjani Medhi, reflecting the sacred guru–shishya dynamic within a mother-daughter partnership. The recital begins with a graceful Ganesh Vandana set to Raag Bhupali and Addha Taal, followed by Shuddha Nritya in Teentaal, which showcases the refined artistry and intricate rhythm of the Lucknow gharana through masterful compositions such as thaat, aamad, tukda, and tihai. The evening culminates in an expressive Abhinaya segment that interlaces the Assamese Borgeet “Tejore Kamala Poti” by Madhavdev with Surdas’s timeless “Main Maiya Mori,” tenderly portraying the bond between Yashoda and Krishna.
Together, these presentations transcend familial ties to celebrate motherhood as a sustaining, generative force, one that nurtures, preserves, and continually reinvents the artistic legacy for future generations.
This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
