About this Event

About the Event

The story of electricity is one of the greatest technological revolutions in human history.

In the early nineteenth century scientists including Oersted, Ampere, Ohm and Faraday made discoveries that would eventually make practical electrical power possible.

Just sixty years later, electricity began transforming everyday life.

In 1881 Godalming became the first town in the world to introduce a public electricity supply, marking a major milestone in technological history.

In this fascinating lecture, Professor Craig Underwood explores the scientific discoveries that made electricity possible, the pioneering role played by Godalming, and the later rivalry between two giants of invention — Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla.

A compelling talk combining science, history and local heritage.
