Power Talks @Electricity Campus: Offshore connecting the Dutch grid

The Power Talks are a new monthly series created for and by employees of all companies on the campus. The idea is simple: informal, fun sessions where we learn from each other, discover what’s happening across the campus, and get to know the people behind the work. We end each meetup with a casual drink to connect, unwind, and mix content with a bit of fun.

The last PowerTalk before summer break will focus on the offshore side of power production and transmission.

How is offshore wind energy connected to the Dutch electricity grid? What technical and infrastructural challenges need to be overcome? And how does grid expansion support the ongoing energy transition?

During this session, we will take a closer look at the HVDC cable systems used in TenneT’s ambitious 2GW Program. Operating at an impressive 525 kV, these next-generation cables are a key enabler for transporting large amounts of renewable energy from offshore wind farms to consumers onshore. We will discuss the cable design process, the international standards and qualification programs that govern their development, and the extensive electrical, thermal, and mechanical testing required to demonstrate long-term reliability and performance. Selected failure modes and the lessons learned from qualification testing will also be highlighted.

In addition, we will explore the current and future development of offshore grid connections and their impact on the Dutch power system.
